Artist’s Statement

Drawn to surreal compositions, my art explores imagined, dream-scape environments where I’m able to control chaos and calamity. I endeavor to create company, confrontations, and consent in not only the life cycle, but what may occur within and outside of it. Using a variety of mediums and disciplines, my work is a way to document my interests, my thoughts, and my fears. Through this physical expression, I feel as though I am reaching the impossible possibility of becoming endless.

Mindful and well-thought-out composition is the most important fundamental component in my work. Although a double-edged sword, my extensive preliminary drawing and planning phase is the most important part of my art process. My favorite kind of artworks are those which are well-rounded, where content inspires context and vise-versa. While compositional flow is my foundation, a mindfully rich color palette is my character. Drawn to deep, bold, and bright color, I continue to strive towards conscientious use of traditional color theory while also making space for my own personal inclinations revolving around chroma. Even in achromatic linoleum block prints, I aim to create high-contrast, visually textured rhythms through my drawings.

As I have always had a soft spot for animals, especially all things aquatic, much of my subject matter revolves around the animal kingdom. Using animalia as an iconographic tool helps me take concepts based around the human experience into (hopefully) non-cliche visual expressions. Community, personal relationships, and socio-economic politics all impact my thinking and everyday life – for me, creating art is a cathartic tool that helps me communicate feelings I sometimes can’t put into words.

Bio

Kayla Magnuson is an Aries from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her work focuses on colorful,  macabre explorations of life and death through a figurative lens. Partial to hot pinks and cobalt blues, Magnuson adorns most of her work with strong borders and curvilinear compositions. To survey human mortality, she often adopts iconography drawn from the animal kingdom. While she mainly works in the second dimension, Magnuson also explores sculpture and installation. Magnuson is currently attending Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma, pursuing a Bachelors in Fine Arts degree. At RSU, the artist has won several awards in annual juried shows— being most proud of winning Department Head’s Choice in the 2023 Student Show with an 11-foot, anatomically correct sculpture “My Leviathan (The Fish).” Magnuson attends downtown Tulsa’s First Friday art crawl each month and is a participatory member of the growing Tulsa art scene through artist’s talks and group shows. She plans on attending graduate school for her Masters in Fine Arts so she can teach college courses (like many in her family before her) while working on her own artwork.
